Philanthropy’s AI Dilemma
Philanthropy experts on how nonprofits are navigating adopting AI without compromising trust.
As AI becomes increasingly ingrained across industries, its use is quickly shifting from experimental to expected. While these tools help organizations move faster, reduce costs, and scale their businesses, AI also opens companies up to scrutiny surrounding the authenticity and sincerity of their work. The philanthropic sector must prioritize transparency in its adoption of AI or risk losing the valuable trust that the field is built on.
According to experts across the industry, it is no longer enough to disclose where AI is being used; nonprofits will maintain the strongest reputations by clearly articulating what it is that they will never automate.
I spoke with leaders across the philanthropic sector, each with varying degrees of expertise in the integration of AI into the field. A common theme was undeniable; in philanthropy, trust rests on moral judgment and human relationships. Efficiency alone is not enough to justify automation. The organizations that stand out won’t just be transparent about their technology, they’ll be explicit about the essential human work at the heart of their mission.
